Market segments

As the Solana Group, we strive to exploit the full potential of the potato. Our innovative varieties are to be found in all market segments. The bottom line is that our range of seed potatoes stands out for its high yields, resistance and consistent qualities.

Food market

Today, our portfolio offers a wide range of varieties for different tastes and ways of cooking, including fast-boiling and easily peelable varieties. In the premium segment, we focus not only on appearance but on homogeneous grading. This is also important for direct sales, as are storable varieties and varieties that are available all year round. Many of our food varieties are suitable for both conventional and organic cultivation.

Processing industry including varieties for chips, crisps, and starch

The potato varieties we produce for the processing industry, such as those for home-frying, and varieties for use by retailers or fast-food and quick-service restaurants (QSR), are characterised by their broad resistance and tolerance with regard to disease, pests and abiotic stress. And they are also of top processing quality, allowing high-quality potato products to be produced with minimum waste. The high nutrient-use efficiency of our low-input varieties is a further advantage that both promotes sustainability and lowers operating costs. In the convenience sector and with chilled potato products, our multipurpose varieties offer excellent processing results. Varieties for the starch industry are broadly resistant to disease and pests, and offer reliably high tuber yields and starch contents.

Seed potatoes for organic farming

In addition to our varieties for conventional farming, we are continually expanding our portfolio of varieties that comply with the special requirements for organic cultivation. Rapid juvenile development and the early development of tubers, or varieties particularly resistant to late blight ensure high yields even without the use of synthetic chemical pesticides. It goes without saying that our organic seed potatoes are grown exclusively from certified propagation material.

From the plantlets to mini-tubers to pre-basic material, we produce mainly at our own breeding stations and on our own farms – under controlled conditions, with high standards of hygiene and continuous phytosanitary checks.

Our expertise permeates the entire value chain, from research and breeding to marketing and international logistics. In excellent, long-standing cooperation with our seed propagators, farmers, industrial customers and partners, we raise solutions to a new level.

Our own in-house production

We produce seed potatoes ourselves on more than 500 hectares, and on another 6,000 hectares under contract, and so we know what we are talking about when it comes to the challenges our seed farmers face.

Advisory service and distribution

Our varieties are also extensively tested on our own trial plots and in cooperation with our international partners on around 25 sites worldwide. This ensures that we are able to develop varieties that meet the requirements of agriculture globally.

Logistics worldwide

From the field and warehouse to customers all over the world: we distribute potato varieties in more than 50 countries. Our service includes our own quality checks before transport, as well as the organisation and handling of global logistics.

Licensed business

In countries where we do not have our own seed potato production and to which we do not export directly, we maintain a network of professional distributors who market our varieties and make them available to the local potato-growing industry. Our licensed partners are trained in close partnership on the properties and potential uses of our varieties.
